Soundbites: The Week In Audio - 08.02.19

This week’s blog takes a look at Bauer Media and Communicorp’s recent acquisitions, Spotify stamping its commitment to podcasting and of course, RAJAR Q4 2018 results!

It’s been a busy week for Bauer Media, as they’ve announced this week that they will acquire Celador Radio, Lincs FM Group - a total of 33 analogue radio stations and three digital services - as well as Wireless local stations across England and Wales.

The addition of Celador and Lincs FM Group stations alone will add 1.1 million weekly listeners to the Bauer portfolio and extends its coverage of the UK.

Paul Keenan, CEO of Bauer Media UK and European Radio stated: “The UK’s love of radio shows no signs of diminishing and we are investing to extend our reach and broaden our offer“.

Communicorp made their first radio acquisition from Adventure Radio with the purchase of Connect FM (Kettering) and Heart Herts.

Communicorp will continue to license Heart Hertfordshire from Global, but will now rebrand Connect FM as Smooth Radio to become part of the East Midlands regional service.

Spotify have taken the plunge and agreed to buy two podcast firms - the Swedish company, Gimlet Media and Anchor (a platform that allows individuals and companies to create, publish and monetise podcasts).

Spotify CEO, Daniel Ek said earlier this week: "opportunity starts with the next phase of growth in audio - podcasting", and Spotify are now planning more acquisitions for podcasts in 2019.
