The popularity of digital radio appears to be making the government sit up and take notice: this week, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) held two roundtables on digital radio progress with contributors from across the industry. These discussions come as the proportion of radio listening on digital platforms is expected to hit the 50% mark when the next RAJAR figures are released next Thursday, the 17th May, prompting consideration of the issue of digital switchover.

Over 300 radio stations around the UK are teaming up to recognise Mental Health Awareness Week by airing a one minute message simultaneously on 15th May at 10.59am. The broadcast will comprise famous voices talking about the stigma of mental health, and is supported by the Royal Foundation’s Heads Together campaign, which aims to change the national conversation on mental health and tackle stigma.

This week Ofcom announced that eight new community radio licences have been awarded in England and Scotland. The awarded stations will serve audiences in Reading, Peterhead, Leeds, Glasgow, Waterlooville and Coventry, and should begin broadcasting in the next two years. Several other stations were sadly not successful in their applications, due to issues such as the unavailability of FM frequencies.
