This week's blog takes a look at Facebook's rivalry with Youtube Watch, Despacito's breakthrough to no. 1, new changes at Magic and much more!

This week, L'Oreal released a new marketing strategy that has added “influencers” to the mix, in a bid to connect with consumers in the digital world and reinforce the brand through diversity. The old model of marketing with celebrities was very top-down and a bit dated,” said Adrien Koskas, L’Oréal Paris UK’s general manager, at the recent Digiday Brand Summit Germany in Berlin.

Facebook has made massive strides in competing with YouTube creating a TV-like rival to YouTube. Facebook now has a new home for original video content, produced exclusively for it by partners who will earn 55 percent of ad break revenue while Facebook keeps 45 percent.

It's happened… the Puerto Rican sensations that are Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, have just broken the Youtube record for most viewed video of all time on Youtube. The previous record holder, See You Again by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth, has been dethroned by the track that has now surpassed 3 billion views.

Gary Vincent is leaving Magic after 13 years on mid-mornings to make way for upcoming schedule changes. Tony Moorey, Group Content Director of Magic and Absolute Radio, said: “Ronan and Harriet’s imminent arrival to Breakfast is the centrepiece for what continues to be a very exciting evolution for the Magic brand and the incredibly talented Nick Snaith will continue his surge during the newly created mid-morning slot.”

Podcast listenership keeps it’s steady incline. According to RAJAR and Ofcom, their research data showed that 24% of UK adults aged 15+ that were surveyed in Q1 2017 had listened to a podcast at least once. Also, Ofcom’s research revealed that just over half of respondents (51%) tuned in to podcasts because they found them interesting to listen to, while 26% did so to “learn something new”.

This week’s podcast to listen to is one that was recommended by a friend and subsequently binge listened to from the start. Don’t let the word feminism put you off, this is not a preachy podcast to make you feel bad about yourself, hence the ‘guilty’ part. Each week host Deborah Frances White is joined by a guest host, usually a comedian and guests from the comedy, celebrity or political world to discuss a topic that affects us all but usually with a female focus. It very cleverly balances serious topics with comedy with regular features of “I’m a feminist but…” and stand up sections from Deborah and guest hosts. You’ll laugh but you will also learn and hopefully be inspired to support some very worthwhile causes. They also support women’s support groups and charities with the most recent episode supporting nurses in the NHS.
